What is local SEO and how do I actually win at it?

If your customers are within driving distance, local search is worth more to you than everything else in SEO combined.

It is also the cheapest work available, because the thing that matters most costs nothing and takes an afternoon. Most businesses either ignore it or fill in half of it and stop.

What is local SEO?

Everything that decides whether you appear when someone searches with a place attached, or with intent that implies one.

“Web designer in Dehradun” is obvious. So is “web designer near me.” But so is “emergency plumber” typed on a phone, where the location is implied and applied silently.

The results at the top, the map with three businesses listed beneath it, are a different system from ordinary search results. Different signals decide them, and you can influence those signals directly.

Ordinary search asks who is the best answer. Local search asks who is the best answer near this person. That is a much smaller competition and a much winnable one.

What matters most for ranking locally?

Three things, in this order, and the first outweighs the rest.

Your Google Business Profile, completely filled in. Not created and abandoned. Every field. Categories, services, hours, description, service area, photographs. Most businesses complete perhaps half and wonder why they sit below a competitor with worse work.

Reviews, in volume and recency. Both matter. Forty reviews from three years ago performs worse than fifteen from this year. Recency signals that the business is active.

Consistency of your details across the web. Name, address, phone number, identical everywhere they appear. Every variation slightly weakens the confidence that these listings are the same business.

Your website matters too, and it matters less than any of those three. Which is good news, because those three are free.

How do I actually fill in my Business Profile properly?

An afternoon, and it is the highest return afternoon available to a local business.

Choose the most specific primary category available, then add secondary categories for everything else you genuinely do. Specific beats broad here.

List your services individually rather than as one lump. Each becomes something you can be matched against.

Add real photographs, ten or more, and add new ones periodically. Profiles with recent photographs perform measurably better, and stock images do nothing.

Write the description as a plain statement of what you do and where, not as marketing copy. This is one of the places an AI answer engine reads about you, and specificity is what gets quoted.

Then use the Posts feature occasionally. Almost nobody does, and activity is a signal.

How do I get reviews without being awkward about it?

Ask at the moment of relief, and make it one click.

The best time is immediately after you have solved something. Not weeks later in a newsletter, but at the point where the person is visibly pleased. That feeling fades faster than most people expect.

Send the direct review link rather than asking them to find you. Every extra step loses a share of people, and “search for us on Google” loses most of them.

Reply to every review, positive and negative. Replies are visible to everyone who reads afterwards, and a calm reply to a critical review does more for a watching prospect than the complaint does against you.

Never buy reviews. It is detectable, and profiles get suspended.

Yes, in specific ways rather than generally.

Your address and phone number should appear in text on the site, not only inside an image. Machines cannot read an image.

You should have a page per service, and if you serve several towns, a genuine page per town. Genuine meaning actually different, with real content about that area. Twelve near-identical pages with the town name swapped is an old tactic that now does harm.

Speed on a phone matters more than for ordinary search, because a large share of local searches happen on mobile data while someone is out.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Faster than ordinary SEO. Weeks rather than months.

Completing a neglected Business Profile can move rankings within a fortnight, because you are supplying information Google wanted and did not have.

Reviews accumulate more slowly, and their effect is gradual and durable.

That speed is what makes this the right starting point. You will see whether it is working long before a general SEO effort would have produced a single sign of life, and it costs nothing but attention.

Being the nearest good option beats being the best option nobody local can find.
